ABOUT THE ROLE

- The individual will follow the VRS Hybrid work schedule including 2 days onsite per week (Tuesday and Wednesday).

- The individual may also be called to be onsite for critical meetings and data related discussions.

- Onsite work will be at the VRS central office at 1200 East Main Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

- The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) Data Office team is seeking up to two (2) senior level Power BI/SQL Developers with strong problem solving, organizational, and communication skills. 

- This role will be expected to collaborate with the Data Office, Business, IT and other stakeholders and play an active role in the Data Quality Enhancement initiative.

- The individual is expected to be a self-starter who is comfortable prioritizing and effectively managing their daily workload.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Assist with overall Power BI/SQL Support (development, performance, process, documentation) related to the Data Quality Enhancement initiative and other development efforts as needed. Activities include:

- Maintain the confidentiality of all business data and adhere to VRS data security policies.

- Meet all deliverables withing the agreed upon timeframe.

- Provide regular status updates and attend various meetings as required.

- Develop, design, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards based on business requirements.

- Create interactive visualizations, reports, dashboards that assist with effective monitoring of Critical Data Elements.

- Advise on best practices in data visualization and report optimization.

- Work closely with business stakeholders to understand their data needs and translate into actionable reports.

- Develop, optimize and maintain SQL queries and stored procedures for data retrieval and manipulation.

- Develop DAX queries to enhance the performance and functionality of reports.

- Develop reports to support KPIs and other performance indicators.

- Provide training and support to end-users on Power BI and SQL tools.

- Review existing SQL Queries, Execution Plans, Partitions, and Index(s) to determine performance enhancements for long running queries.

- Provide alternative options to existing data manipulation techniques. Examples would be converting Excel manipulation activities into solutions that reduce process/cycle time of data preparation.

- Special projects at the direction of the Chief Operating Officer or Data Officer.

 

Required Skills and Experience:

- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in developing reports, dashboards, and data visualizations using Power BI.

- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in SQL Server SQL development, including writing complex queries, stored procedures, and performance tuning.

- Experience in writing complex DAX queries.

- Experience with MS SQL Server data modelling and schema design.

- Experience working in an Agile development environment.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team that includes business and technical stakeholders.

- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

 

Desired Skills:

- Experience in Pensions Benefit Management programs.

- Experience with other BI tools (e.g., Tableau, QlikView).

- Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R.

- Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS).

- Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate or equivalent.

- Other relevant certifications in SQL, Data Analysis and database management.

 

Education and/or Experience                                            

- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred and 5+ years’ experience with technology or data organizations required.

- This will be a contract position starting with a period of at least 6 months. 

- To be effective, this resource would need to be available within the next 6 weeks. 

- VRS desires to interview proposed individuals before final approval.
